Sustainability is no longer an option; it is a necessity that affects both businesses and individuals. In our latest interview in EdTech Generation, Guillem Bargalló, Head of Sustainability at IKEA Catalonia offers us an in-depth insight into how small actions can bring about big changes.
«Sustainability is already part of many people’s lives, but we need to be more aligned»
Bargalló points out that although environmental awareness has grown enormously in recent years, there is still a gap between intentions and actual actions. According to him, many companies still view sustainability as a regulatory obligation rather than as an opportunity to spearhead a much-needed change.

During the interview, Bargalló emphasised that you don’t need to be a multinational to make a difference. “Creating a positive working environment, looking after your team and making responsible decisions in your day-to-day work is already a big step towards sustainability”. This approach emphasises the immediate, day-to-day impact, debunking the notion that only major changes create value.
«The circular economy is the future, but it requires collective commitment»
At IKEA, circular design is key to reducing its environmental footprint. Bargalló explains how reuse, repair and waste reduction are cornerstones of its strategy. However, he adds that these practices must be complemented by a shift in consumer mindset: “It’s not about consuming more, but about consuming better”.
