Sustainability is no longer an option, it is a necessity that impacts both companies and individuals. In our last interview in EdTech GenerationGuillem Bargalló, Head of Sustainability at IKEA Catalonia, gives us an in-depth look at how small actions can create big changes.
“Sustainability is already in the lives of many, many people, but we need to align ourselves more.”
Bargalló points out that although environmental awareness has grown enormously in recent years, there is still a gap between intentions and actual actions. According to him, many companies still see sustainability as a regulatory obligation and not as an opportunity to lead a necessary change.
“Small businesses have immense power in the little things.”
During the interview, Bargalló stressed that you don’t need to be a multinational to make a difference. “Creating a positive work environment, taking care of your team and making responsible decisions in your day-to-day life is already a big step towards sustainability.” This approach emphasizes the close, everyday impact, demystifying the idea that only big changes generate value.
“Circular economy is the future, but it requires collective commitment.”
At IKEA, circular design is key to reducing the environmental footprint. Bargalló explains how reuse, repair and waste reduction are pillars of its strategy. However, he adds that these practices must be complemented by a change of mentality in consumption: “It’s not about consuming more, but consuming better“.
“Our planet is our home, and to take care of it is to take care of ourselves.”
With its innovative approach, IKEA promotes projects such as the restoration of Doñana and the promotion of the circular economy in Spain, making it clear that sustainability is not only part of its DNA, but also part of its social commitment.
“There is hope, and we create it with our choices.”
Guillem concludes with an optimistic message: “We are very optimistic. We are the ones who decide where we want to go. Small actions add up and, in the end, have the power to transform our world. “.
