But is it possible to slow down the human ageing through our habits? In a recent interview on the ‘Generación EdTech’ podcast, Sergio Colado tackles this issue from an innovative perspective.

«Zombie cells are cells that no longer function, but do not die either»

In the interview, Sergio Colado highlights the existence of what he calls «zombie cells’: “They are the sort of cells that no longer function, but do not die either. Nor do they disappear.» These cells build up in the body, causing a progressive deterioration that accelerates human ageing. The problem is that, although they no longer fulfil their function, they continue to take up space and have a negative effect on the surrounding tissues.

«Stress, a sedentary lifestyle and lack of sleep make us age faster»

As well as zombie cells, Colado mentions other factors that contribute to the premature ageing, such as stress, lack of sleep and a sedentary lifestyle. «Not getting enough sleep and sleeping poorly… Check. Stress… Definitely check«, he notes in a critical yet approachable tone, emphasising that these habits are common in today’s society and can accelerate the human ageing.

The role of science in active ageing

Throughout the conversation, Colado emphasises the importance of science in the search for solutions to promote active ageing. Whilst some advances have made it possible to identify factors that accelerate ageing, such as the oxidative stress or cellular mutations, there is still a long way to go in the field of cell regeneration and the removal of senescent cells.

How can we promote active ageing?

To promote active ageing, Colado recommends paying attention to everyday habits. «Getting a good night’s sleep, eating a balanced diet and reducing stress are key to slowing down cellular ageing«, says the expert. Incorporating moderate physical exercise routines It also helps to keep the body and mind in balance, delaying the signs of ageing.

Final thoughts

The active ageing It depends not only on scientific strategies, but also on the personal choices we make every day. ‘Hacking’ the ageing process may sound like something out of a sci-fi film, but it starts with small changes in our daily lives. Are we ready to live longer and better lives?

If you’d like to find out more about active ageing and discover the scientific advances that are bringing us closer to a longer, healthier life, don’t miss the full interview with Sergio Colado on the ‘Generación EdTech’ podcast.
